Kirstan Knowlton: Downtown Day of Caring

Let’s hope for some good weather, on Friday, May 19, because the Berlin Main Street Program will be holding its annual Downtown Day of Caring.

As a huge fan of all things local, I love this day, because it brings several of my favorite things together: downtown, local friends and flowers!

Oh, and of course the smell of fresh mulch.

This year, instead of just covering the event, I will be working with members of the North Country Rainbow Alliance and some of my friends over at Assemble to brighten up the space known as the “Art Park,” located behind Aubuchon Hardware.

Driving by earlier this week, I noticed that there was prep being done to the retaining wall, along side the road just past the hardware store, for a mural that will be painted by a very talented local Deidra Blair.

I can’t wait to see it!

Even though lots of local groups volunteer annually, the Berlin Main Street Program is always looking for new volunteers. You know what they say, “Many hands make light work.”

A few hours of time and some sweat equity is all it takes to make downtown Berlin look it's best. They are looking for volunteers to help rake, prune, sweep, mulch, weed and plant their way through multiple sites in the downtown area.

Once the work is all done, they also host a fantastic barbecue at lunchtime for all the volunteers at Bickford Place, located near Family Dollar.

Even if you don’t have an entire day to devote to cleaning up the downtown, you can volunteer for an hour, the morning or even make arrangements to come in the afternoon.

Locations will be set up by the Berlin Main Street Program, and groups or organizations who want to volunteer can sign up by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or calling (603) 752-6246 or (603) 381-1520.

All participants should bring gardening supplies, if available, including gloves, brooms, rakes, wheelbarrows and other gardening hand tools they may have from home. Other supplies will be available on site at Bickford Place Park.

Also, don’t forget that the Berlin Destination Imagination team, Abstract Minds, will be holding a road toll fundraiser today, Saturday, May 6, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Veteran’s Park in Berlin.

If you are not able to make it out for the road toll, but would still like to make a donation you can contact Team Co-manager David Griffin by calling (603) 466-2276 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. I hope that everyone has a wonderful weekend. As always, I will spending time with the family, and based on the current forecast, we will be spending it indoors!
