Berlin Recreation and Parks Department gears up for spring with events and activities

BERLIN — The Berlin Recreation and Parks Department will be holding several events and activities to kick-off the start of spring including the return of community gardens, the annual yard sale and cosmic bowling.

Kindergarten–grade 2 kickball: This is the final week to join the kickball program, which starts April 15. It's a fun, easy sport taught by Jim Couhie. The program will run on Saturdays for five weeks starting April 15, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Gilbert Street Field (inside Berlin Recreation if inclement weather). The cost is $35.00 per person.

The 21st  annual giant spring yard sale: The spring yard sale will be held Saturday, April 22, 8 a.m.–1 p.m. The yard sale will have household items, clothes, holiday decorations, toiletries, Scentsy and much more.

April School Vacation event: Cosmic bowling with pizza, soda and make your own sundae: The recreation department will hold a bowling event on Wednesday, April 26. Any age or ability can participate in this cosmic experience, 11 a.m.–1 p.m. at Berlin Bowling Center. The cost is $10 for ages 12 and older; $8 for ages 11 and younger. Register at Berlin Recreation Center or Berlin Bowling Center with payment. Maximum of 40 participants.

Community gardens: Past gardeners may register for their same lot during the month of April. Starting May 1, anyone wishing a garden at the East Milan gardens may register for a lot at Berlin Recreation Center. Limited lots are available at $10 for 25-by-25-foot lots, $5 for half-size lots. Gardeners must do their own tilling.

Friendship Park raised beds: Ten 4-by-8-foot raised beds at Friendship Park are available for your green thumb. Past gardeners may claim their same bed during the month of April. Also in April, residents living near Friendship Park can call (603) 752-2010 to see if your address qualifies, may register for a previously unclaimed bed. Starting May 1, any unclaimed bed will be available on a first come, first served basis. $20 per bed. Register at Berlin Recreation Center.

Little Tykes Playground for ages 3-5: Little Tykes will hold its final session before summer break, Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 2–June 8, 8:45–11:45 a.m. at the Berlin Recreation Center. Miss Missy leads potty-trained children ages 3–5 in a number of activities including basic lessons, crafts, show and tell, exercise and snack time to name just a few. The cost is $72 per child for the six-week program. Limited number of children will be taken on a first come, first served basis.

Soccer camp: British Soccer camp returns to Berlin for its third year, Monday–Friday, June 19–23, at the Gilbert Street Field. Register online by May 5, and receive a free British Soccer replica jersey. The cost is $62 per person. Ages 2 and 3 will have lessons from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. Ages 4 and 5 can choose 4-5 p.m. or 6:30–7:30 p.m. Challenger Sports coaches are trained to teach the basics of soccer in a fun, enjoyable atmosphere.
