When the nationally recognized #GivingTuesday celebrates its sixth year today, Granite United Way will be among the thousands of charities across the nation that help raise awareness about this kickoff to the giving season. #GivingTuesday was created to celebrate generosity during the holiday season, following two of the largest shopping days of the year (Black Friday and Cyber Monday.)
#GivingTuesday is primarily a mobile experience, using social media to spread the word, attract new donors to the organization and fundraise for a particular cause. For Granite United Way the cause is books for kids. Last year during #GivingTuesday, Granite United Way raised enough funds to purchase more than 700 books for children located across its six regions, which represent about 80 percent of the State of New Hampshire and Windsor County, Vt.
“Our team of staff and #GivingTuesday ambassadors are excited about putting books in kids’ hands again this year with our #NewYearNewChapter campaign,” said Patrick Tufts, President and CEO of Granite United Way.
This year, they are also planning to do a “Reading Relay” for Giving Tuesday. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Nov. 28, Granite United Way’s #GivingTuesday Ambassadors will participate in a reading relay at local childcare centers and schools throughout the Granite United Way area. Donors to Giving Tuesday can “sponsor” our ambassadors as they are reading to children. Ambassadors will promote their efforts in the Reading Relay throughout their own personal networks and on their social media.
Granite United Way’s theme is #NewYearNewChapter, and dollars raised will be used to purchase and distribute books to children throughout the organization’s area, which supports our other efforts to promote literacy and reading.
