Joseph A. "Marcel" Arsenault, age 84, passed away on April 4, 2017. He was born and raised in Berlin, the son of the late Adolph and Lillian (Lambert) Arsenault. Joseph served in the U.S. Army from 1949-1952 during the Korean War and earned his Purple Heart while defending the Pusan Perimeter. In addition, he received numerous recognitions for his military service. He earned a Korean Service Medal with one Silver Service Star, the U.N. Service Medal, a Presidential Unit Citation, and one Overseas bar.
He met his wife of nearly 63 years, Alberta "Bert" Drew of Lancaster through mutual friends and the couple moved to Clayton, N.J., where Joseph worked for N.J. Bell / Verizon and retired after 34 years of dedicated service. He also served on the Clayton Police Reserves and Ambulance Corps. Joseph also served as a Civil Defense and HAM radio operator during the Cold War. He received his private pilot’s license in 1955, and belonged to the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Assn.), Chapter 216 in Cross Keys, N.J.
He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church. In previous years, he coached Clayton Little League, and also played many stringed instruments, including the pedal steel guitar in the country band Just Reward.
He is survived by his wife Alberta "Bert"; children, Joseph M. "Maynard" and wife Susan, Lori Littlefield and husband Jerry, and Paul and wife Joelle; grandchildren J. Douglas, Rachel and Brian Arsenault; Travis, Alyssa and Courtney Littlefield; Erin, Ament and Kyle Arsenault; sister, Olive Lemire; brothers Jean and Normand Arsenault; great grandchildren, Jayden and Taylor, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A mass of Christian burial was held on April 8, at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Delsea Drive, Clayton, N.J. Burial with full military honors followed at Gloucester County Veterans Cemetery, Williamstown, N.J.
