Muriel C. (Ashley) O’Brien Bassett, 95, of Berlin, passed away peacefully surrounded by love and friendship on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017, at the Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin, N.H.

She was born in Calais, Maine, the daughter of the late Rufus & Blanche (Lakin) Ashley. Raised in Woodland, Maine, she worked for the town as the town clerk after living in Central Maine for many years. She and her husband Lawrence moved to the Berlin area in 1969. She was the co-owner of the C.N. Hodgdon Oil Company in Berlin for many years.

Members of the family include her husband, Earl D. Bassett, of Berlin, sons Ashley O’Brien and wife Linda of Livermore, Maine, Rev. Timothy O’Brien of Windsor Locks, Conn., and Dennis O’Brien and wife Deborah of Newburyport, Mass.; daughters Kate O’Brien Minson and husband Dr. Ron of Denver, Colo., and Sr. Mary Judith O’Brien of Saginaw, Mich., four grandchildren, five great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband Lawrence O’Brien; a brother James Ashley and one grandchild.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017, at 11a.m. at St. Anne Church of Good Shepherd Parish. At Muriel’s request there will be no calling hours. Friends and relatives are asked to meet directly at the church. Interment will be in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Muriel’s memory may be made to Senior Meals of Coos County, 610 Sullivan Street, Berlin, NH 03570. Theresa C. (Hamel) Guerin passed away peacefully in her home on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017. She was 90 years old.

Born in Berlin on Oct. 5, 1927, she was the daughter of Edmond and Eva (Bergeron) Hamel. She spent her life in Berlin, N.H. On Jan. 26, 1956, she married Thomas Guerin.

In the earlier years, she worked at Paul’s Laundry and at Converse Rubber Shoe Company. She was a member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary.

Theresa was an avid shopper and could always be spotted at Walmart; she had a great sense of humor and had a very generous spirit. She enjoyed knitting, dancing and listening to country music. She most enjoyed spending time camping over the past 50 years.

Beside her parents, she is predeceased by husband Thomas; and a brother Wilfred Hamel. She leaves behind her son Ronald Guerin and wife Elizabeth “Bette”; a daughter Jean (Lapointe) Eafrati and husband Butch; a sister Florence (Hamel) Shorty and husband Don; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

There will be a graveside service at Holy Family Cemetery and celebration of life at a later date next spring. Donations in her memory may be made to North Country Home Health and Hospice, 536 Cottage Street, Littleton, NH 03561.

Louise S. Birt

Louise S. Birt, 101, of Deland, Fla,. and formerly of Berlin, N.H., passed away on Saturday morning Nov. 18, 2017, at Woodland Towers in Deland, Fla.

She was born in Berlin, N.H. on Oct. 8, 1916, the daughter of the late James L. and Ina V. (Smith) Stewart and had lived most of her life in Berlin. She moved to Florida several years ago to be near family. Louise graduated in 1934, and had been employed by the city of Berlin as public librarian for many years. She was an active member of the former UCC Congregational Church, a member of the Auxiliary to the VFW Post 2520 in Berlin and also a member of M.E.S.H.

Members of her family include her daughters, Carolyn Corrigan-Wayne of Deltona, Fla., and Martha Gagne of Melbourne, Fla.; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; nieces and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband Lawrence J. Birt in 2000, by two sisters and two brothers and a grandchild Stephen Corrigan.

Service was held for Edwin Palmer

A chapel service was held for Edwin Palmer at Fleury-Patry Funeral Home in Berlin, N.H., on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017, with Pastor Dean Stiles serving as celebrant.

A private burial in the family lot was at Foster Cemetery, in Wentworth N.H.
