Tom Pickford: Wheeler’s inspiration built Gaydo Field

To the editor:

On Saturday, Sept. 30, as part of the Berlin High School Homecoming 2017, there was a dedication of a bench at Gaydo Field for the late Maurice Wheeler, who was the director of the Berlin Public Works department.

This is long overdue.

There would not have been a soccer/field hockey/track facility if Maurice had not sent truckload after truckload of fill to the field. The Berlin Water Works and other truckers did the same. Maurice supplied a bulldozer that was driven by Bob Rasmusen who volunteered his time on weekends to level off the field.

Rasmusen’s daughter, Pam, who was an eighth grader on the varsity track team coached by Bob Lord, was his inspiration. I was a Berlin Recreation Department commissioner at the time. Many people volunteered their time and heavy equipment, but it was Maurice's inspiration to build it. Thanks Maurice. Rest in peace.
